At a recent Board of Directors meeting, members of the public asked the Board to consider extending services on Saturday evenings in Meadville. A group of seniors indicated that they rely on CATA and like to go to dinner after church on Saturday evenings but based on the service schedule, they do not have enough time after church to enjoy dinner and fellowship (as current shared ride services end with last pick ups at 7:00PM. One senior noted that “we like to go out on Saturday evenings just like anyone else”. As a result of this meeting and a recent rider survey, CATA will be operating shared ride, door-to-door service in the Meadville area on an extended evening basis for the month of May with service running until 9:00PM.
Tim Geibel, General Manager stated that “the shared ride program is supported through fare reimbursement from the PA Lottery and as long as our grant agreements with PennDOT account for the operation of services, CATA can extend the hours of shared ride”. Currently, all fixed routes on Saturday end at 5:00PM with the exception of the Loop that operates during the Allegheny College school year and is open to the public.
Beginning Saturday May 6th and ending on Saturday May 27th, CATA will operate shared ride services in the City of Meadville, West Mead and Vernon Townships with last pick ups by 9:00PM. “We will assess the ridership patterns during the extended 2 hour period to determine if there is enough interest from the public to support later evening service”, Geibel added. He concluded by stating that “CATA is a public service, if we can meet additional needs of our community and cover our costs, we will continue to provide the service. I’m appreciative of the seniors coming to our meeting and expressing their concerns”.
